POSTERS OF 2012

REVEREND HORTON HEAT
Interesting facts about this poster and how it made me so happy I cried....
At first, the record label refused to let us use the poster for promotional material. They only allowed their in-house artists to make promotional materials, which is understandable. But the only poster that was sent to the bar was one for the Brains and one for The Real McKenzies. And (obviously) this one was far superior!! So I got some really nice copies made, and had the promoter speak to the Rev and ask if I could sell them at the door and give the band 50% of proceeds. He said I could keep all the money, as long as the band each got a copy for themselves. I sold a shit load of posters, got to keep all the money, and at the end of the night, I hung out with the band a little and they just gave me so many compliments on my work. Jimbo held my hand and, in his southern drawl, said "You've got a real talent there, darlin'" and then my heart exploded. The Rev was the same way, told me he loved my work and thanked me for the poster! HEART THROB - I love those guys. Then, a well known pal in the Hamilton music scene sent me a message and asked to buy the original and I told him I had a sentimental attachment to it, and he offered to buy it at a price I cannot mention but basically, yeah... it's sold. I miss it. It's on a nice thick watercolour paper, the colours and details are vibrant. *sigh* (Another cool fact, the guy who bought it was offered an extra $200 for it but he said no. This happened in front of me, so I know it's fact!)

POSTERS OF 2011

FAMOUS FRAMUS BAND
The manager of Famous Framus approached me to do a hand drawn poster for their upcoming CD release party. He gave me creative freeedom and I came up with this. I wanted something woodsy looking, but also a bit edgy and still a bit trippy. I spent an insane amount of time drawing and colouring this one, but the effect was worth it.

B.A. JOHNSTON
I was stoked to do a poster for B.A. because he usually has his posters done by a really cool company in Halifax. This poster came out around the time that the Occupy Movement was happening, so I phrased it as him Occupying Art Crawl instead of Playing it.

THE SOCIAL WORKERS
Okay - this is a little bit of trivia for you....  "The Social Workers" was the original name of one of my all time favourite Hamilton bands - New Hands. Yep! Also, The Chocolate Robots are a cool band from Sarnia and are friends with my best friends husband - and they also own the best damn pizza place in the world!!!!! POSTERS OF 2010

JOHNNY WINTER

This poster still hangs above the bar. People often say "That show didn't actually happen here though, did it?" It sure as hell did. I was tending bar that night and didn't get a chance to meet him. He wasn't one of these guys that hangs out in the green room. He was escorted on to the stage and when he was done he was escorted to his tour bus. Like a unicorn, or a Polk-a-roo - he eluded me.

ROBERT GORDON

A Rockabilly legend from the 70's R.G. has played This Ain't Hollywood numerous times. At this particular show, I went back stage to get my photo taken with him and when I went to hug him I spilled his vodka all over his shirt. He's known for being a little bit grouchy at times and I was fully expecting him to yell at me. But instead he said "That's refreshing!" because it was like a sauna in there. This mans voice will melt your panties away. *swoon*

THE GREASEMARKS & 32 GUNRACK

The Greasemarks are an excellent rockabilly band. I believe they are originally from Toronto, but are now based out of Hamilton. I could be wrong. I will possibly look into that. Okay. I just did... if you google them, there's one link that says "Greasemarks - Nasty Guelph Rockabilly" and the next one says "Greasemarks - Nasty Toronto Rockabilly" .... what the? Wanna look into them more? Go to their website: http://www.greasemarks.com
As for 32 Gunrack, they were a band that people loved to watch. Everyone who saw them were in love with them. From the sultry voice of Tammy Lively and the mesmerizing guitar of Robbie Dootes Elmer and the genius lyrics of Darryl Gould - this was a band that was guaranteed to go places. And then they quit. I still haven't forgiven any of them. Check this link out!

BOB BRYDEN & CHRIS CLAUSE
Hahahah Okay - anyone who knows these guys is probably looking at this poster like "WTF?" hahah. If you don't know them, you have to understand that these guys are peace loving hippies. This poster makes no sense. I was asked to do a poster, so I looked up a couple photos and put them on a black page. I couldn't help but notice how they both looked like they were in a death metal band. I whipped this poster together as a joke and sent it to Lou at This Ain't Hollywood as a joke. I expected him to laugh about it and I would send him something new. But he loved the irony and humour of it so he printed them up. So funny!!

POSTERS OF 2009 - This Ain't Hollywood

I think the death of the Corktown was what fuelled the Lionshead days. After a few years at the Head, it was brought to my attention that Lou Molinaro (the bringer of great shows) was opening a new club with Glen Faulman (of Sam Lawrence 5). I immediately requested a job and Lou obliged. The Lionshead was for sale and it was perfect timing to make a move.
In 2009 they took over Copper Johns and changed the name to "This Ain't Hollywood". Obviously, I made some posters (by hand) for a few shows.... There's a few more out there, but right now I can only find this one:

ARCHIVAL (In the Beginning...)

ARCHIVAL

These are the first posters I ever made... well, there's a few before these, random ones that I haven't seen in years. If I find them I will add them!

The following were created for shows I booked at the Lionshead when I was working there. I didn't have photoshop so I made them all by hand. It was a lot of work trying to keep up. As you can imagine, booking bands is A LOT OF WORK, even for a small venue. It's fun, yes. But it's also stressful, tiring and at times, frustrating. Add to that, a full work schedule behind the bar, a busy social life and trying to draw these posters for all the shows. It was impossible to do one for every show, but these are the ones I got done... There is at least one missing that is a little upsetting to me... a hand drawn poster I did for Baskery. Hands down the busiest show the Lionshead had ever seen - no doubt, that record will be held for a long, long time! (Thanks Lou)

SNOWHEEL SLIM (pre-Boogie Infection)
Snow Heel Slim - (Pre-Boogie Infection) Although this band has kept all the original members, the name has since been changed to Snow Heel Slim & The Boogie Infection. They were a new band at that time (2007) . From the moment I heard them, I dubbed them my new favourite Hamilton band! Snow Heel Slim (And the Boogie Infection) consist of: Snow Heel Slim, Danny T & Slopbucket. Go see them. Be prepared to dance. A lot!

"...a three-piece boogie/rock/blues powerhouse..." Comparable to Johnny Winters and Hound Dog Taylor (To quote Fred Eaglesmith)

THE RESPONSIBLES
The Responsibles had played the Lionshead before, and they've played since. But they are the one band that no one believe could play at the Head - simply because of the size. The Responsibles are a five piece ska band from Hamilton. Imagine a band that size in that little room - but somehow it worked!! These guys know how to take their big sound and harness it to fit into a small room.

JACK PEDLER
Jack Pedler, the famous Teenage Head drummer released an album in 2007 called "Let's Get Nervous"  I was honoured to have him play the Head. Since then we have become friends and I just love seeing his smiling face at shows. He's always ready to come over, say "How ya' doin' kiddo?" and give me a big hug. Amazing. He's such a character!!!  Watch this hilarious video of his hit single "Dumpster Juice"
DUMPSTER JUICE by Jack Pedler

HARRISON KENNEDY
Harrison Kennedy is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet! He is also quite successful! Harrison joined "The Chairman of the Board" in 1968. He's played on the Johnny Carson Show, Soul Train, Top of the Pops and American Band Stand. He's shared the stage with Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and many more!! This music legend still lives in Hamilton and he was kind enough to play for us at the Lionshead. Harrison is loved by so many people because he is a gentle soul - and he's also very handsome! Go see him play!!

BUCKSHOT BEBEE & LORI YATES
BUCKSHOT BEBEE & LORI YATES: once bandmates in the Evelyn Dicks, these ladies make a fantastic duo! Buckshot is now backed by a band called "The Secret Boyfriends" and has won the 2013 HMA for best female performer!!Lynn is also a fashion designer, and you can check out her stuff at Blackbird Studios on James St. North!
Lori Yates not only continues to rock the alt-country music scene, but is also doing some great Hamilton-centric photography!

Famous Framus played the Lionshead several times. I remember wondering what the hell was going on when the audience started running around the room with little wooden horses! It was energetic and lots of fun. NOW MAGAZINE got it mostly right when they noted: "like a big, mean, drunken rampage, Famous Framus Band don't hold back, but instead come out swingin' with a mix of punkabilly and blues." (All true except for the mean drunk part - these guys are really friendly and professional!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Tki3Hoz-8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnb01fPxovU

Oh wow - "The Johnny Angel 78 Spin Out" was something else! A LOT of folks just did not get it. Hahah Basically it was a guy with a stack of old 78s, a vintage record player and a microphone from the dollar store. He would announce his songs and it sounded dirty and... well... kinda awful. But in a cool way! He once announced his first song followed by the phrase "If you're lookin' fer something real clean, ya better leave now" - which I thought was legendary and I put it on the poster! The people who came to his shows did so with the intention of getting very drunk, listening to some rare gems (everything from Hank Williams to .... well... a lot of names I don't recall.) Not sure what Johnny is up to these days...

Ginger St. James played the Lionshead a few times. The guys loved her (obviously)
Everyone knows how much I love Ginger. When I don't see her for a long time, I complain about having Ginger-vitis! If you don't know who she is, I am truly sad for you. Not only is she a hard working, professional, gorgeous, talented and fascinating performer - she is a total sweety! GO TO HER SHOWS. BUY HER MERCH! GO ON TOUR WITH HER! Hahahah And check out more about her here:

The Squids and the Punk Rods was double bill that I loved to book at the Lionshead. Some of the regulars were not fans of punk music but the owner didn't care because the sales were over the top!!! We sold a few bottles of Jager a night at these shows (In a room that was supposed to fit 35 people, but I'm pretty sure it was more like 50 ppl!) The Squids still play around Hamilton and you should check them out. They are a 2 piece surf-punk with some classic songs, even one about squirrels and peanut butter! The Punk Rods dismantled after over a decade of performances. The lead singer is now known as B.B. DeVille and the rest of the band has formed Kryptcreeper, a horror-punk band. All are still friends. All are great performers.
